Notes on student teaching

As I mentioned previously, I have now started the student teaching portion of my Master’s program at UIC.  I’ve been at my placement school for about two weeks now and everything is going great so far.  I really like my mentor teacher and etc.  Here are the three most interesting/funny things I’ve observed since I’ve been there:

  • A student blatantly checking tumblr and reblogging something on a school-issued Netbook computer right in front of me, and then my mentor teacher yelling at her for doing so.  Poor kid, she just wanted to catch up on her dashboard!
  • When asked if they knew what Columbine was (in reference to an article they were reading), out of two classes of sophomore honors students, only three to four students raised their hands.  WTF MINDBLOWING.  I know they were born in 1995-1996, but still!
  • Witnessing my first teenage hallway makeout and having my mentor teacher yell out “Ah, young love…now break it up!”  Priceless…and disgusting.
