This morning, I flew back to Chicago after a long weekend in NYC celebrating my friend’s 27th birthday (which was today, happy birthday, Kari!).  When I booked my flight earlier this summer, I purposefully chose to fly back on the 12th, instead of Sunday, the 10th anniversary of 9/11.  I didn’t necessarily think anything was going to happen, but better safe than sorry, I suppose.
I’ve written a lot about my 9/11 experience (2010, 2009) on my Tumblr, but how I felt on every anniversary since 2001 paled in comparison to what it felt like to be back in New York for the 10th anniversary yesterday.  The last time I was in NYC on the eleventh of September was in 2001, when I was a junior in high school, living twenty minutes outside New York City.  Yesterday, Meredith and I woke up, attempted to avoid CNN and the internet, and went shopping around Park Slope and Carroll Gardens.  We purposefully avoided going into Manhattan as well.  We did, however, venture over to the promenade in Brooklyn Heights, which looks out over lower Manhattan and the entire financial district.  It was extremely emotional and difficult to look out at the city across the water and imagine where the twin towers used to stand.  I snapped the above picture with my phone as we stood at the promenade.
Next June will mark my own personal tenth anniversary—ten years since I moved away from New York.  Although it’s been a long time since I had a New York address, I’ll never forget what it felt like to experience 9/11 in person, or to call New York my home for seventeen years.  Who knows, maybe someday I’ll even wind up living there again.  All that matters is that I’m happy with where I am in life and that I was able to spend yesterday in the comfort of my two best friends.
